Mel Gibson recently faced criticism after discussing a conspiracy theory about the Los Angeles wildfires during a TV appearance. The 69-year-old actor shared that his Malibu home was destroyed in the fires while he was in Austin, Texas. He described the loss of his multi-million-dollar mansion as “devastating” and “emotional.”
While speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Gibson explained how his house was “completely toasted” in the fire, adding that it was difficult to witness such a complete burn. He had lived in the house for 14 to 15 years, making it feel like home. But his comments took a different turn when he appeared on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle.
Gibson discussed a theory about the fires, even admitting it was “insane.” He mentioned how officials were messing with water reserves and raised the question, “Do they want the state empty?” He speculated about people possibly starting the fires intentionally, claiming the wind conditions were right, and there were people ready to ignite them.
As the conversation progressed, Gibson continued discussing the possibility that the fires were more than just natural occurrences. He also noted that high-density housing was being pushed as a potential solution to rebuild after the destruction. His remarks were met with backlash on X (formerly Twitter), with many users criticizing his comments and calling them baseless.
One viewer expressed their frustration, saying, “Conspiracy theories are his last claims to fame,” while another said, “I will never watch another movie with him in it.” Others felt his comments were shameful and called for him to take a break.
The fires have been among the most destructive in U.S. history, with at least 16 lives lost and many others still missing. Firefighters continue to work hard to contain the flames. Meanwhile, authorities have issued health warnings regarding water safety and air quality, as the disaster continues to unfold.
