Young family of four among victims wiped out in DC plane crash

A Virginia family of four was among the victims of the American Airlines crash on Wednesday night in Washington, DC.

The Livingston family from Ashburn was returning home from Wichita, Kansas, after 11-year-old Alydia and 14-year-old Everly competed in the 2025 US Figure Skating Championships.

The two sisters died in the crash on Flight 5342, along with their father, Peter, and mother, Donna.

Family friend Kim Urban told CNN that the girls were talented skaters, and their parents were deeply involved in their lives. “They were a close-knit family, always supportive of each other,” she said.

Urban described the girls as bright, energetic, and dedicated to skating. Her own children skated with them and were heartbroken over the loss.

Everly had big dreams. In November 2023, she told Fox News, “I want to be part of Team USA and compete around the world.”

The sisters had posted a final message on Instagram while at the Intrust Bank Arena, where the championships were held. They wrote: “We were born ready for this, but is @usfigureskating ready for this much Livingston at Nationals?”

Cassandra Atkins, a family friend, designed many of their skating outfits. “Donna was an amazing mom,” she said.

She added that the girls loved to stand out and chose bright colors for their costumes.

“They were always on skates,” Atkins said. “If they weren’t on the ice, they were roller skating or finding another way to move.”

Their parents loved sharing their daughters’ achievements. In her last Facebook post, Donna shared exciting news about Alydia getting a new skating partner.

The family had just taken a vacation to Disney World and Universal Studios before heading to Kansas for the competition.

The Livingstons were among the 67 people who died in the crash between the American Airlines plane and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter.

At least 28 bodies, including three soldiers, have been recovered from the Potomac River.

Among the 60 passengers, 14 were figure skaters, including six from the Skating Club of Boston.

Broadcasters Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski, both former skaters, addressed the tragedy during the 2025 European Figure Skating Championships.

Weir fought back tears as he said, “We are heartbroken. This is a huge loss for our skating community.”

A moment of silence was held in memory of the victims.
