Woman’s response to ex-husband winning $273,000,000 lottery after the divorce has people saying ‘he won twice’

Imagine getting divorced, only to find out that your ex has suddenly become a millionaire. That’s exactly what happened to Eileen Murray, whose ex-husband Mike Weirsky won a massive lottery jackpot just months after their divorce.

Eileen and Mike were married for 15 years, but during their time together, Mike struggled to keep a steady job. Because of this, Eileen was the main provider in their household. In many divorces, the higher-earning spouse may have to pay alimony to support their ex even after the marriage ends.

According to WomensLaw.org, “Your spouse can be ordered to pay you alimony if the judge finds that you were financially dependent on your spouse during the marriage (‘the dependent party’).” In this case, Eileen was ordered to pay alimony to Mike for five years, as he had been financially dependent on her.

However, just five months after their divorce, everything changed. In 2019, Mike won $273 million in the Mega Millions lottery. Despite now having more money than he could ever need, Eileen was still required to continue her alimony payments.

Speaking to Inside Edition, Eileen shared her thoughts on the situation. She pointed out that, compared to his massive winnings, the alimony was almost meaningless. “To him, [the alimony] is pocket change at this point. Think about the amount of money that he has just won. What I’m paying him is a pittance.”

Understandably, she felt it was unfair to keep paying him. However, she also made it clear that she wasn’t trying to take any of his lottery money. “I don’t want anyone to think that I’m trying to take his money,” she said.

Even years later, clips from her interview continue to spark debates online. Some people feel that Mike should give her some money out of gratitude for all the years she supported him. One person commented, “She helped him for years. The right thing to do would be to give her something.” Another added, “If I won, I’d still give her a few million for everything she did.”
