This plane is as heavy as 80 African elephants—imagine seeing something that massive flying through the sky.
When you spot a plane nearly the length of an American football field and as tall as a five-story building, there are two possible reasons why it’s in the air.
One reason is straightforward. This modified Boeing 747-200 is sometimes used to transport high-ranking U.S. government officials, including the Secretary of Defense.
The second reason is far more serious. This aircraft, called the E-4B, serves as an airborne command center in case of a national emergency.
According to the U.S. Air Force, the E-4B “Nightwatch” is part of the National Military Command System. If ground command centers like the White House or Pentagon are destroyed, this plane ensures that U.S. leaders can still communicate and make critical decisions.
“The E-4B provides a highly survivable command, control, and communications center to direct U.S. forces, execute emergency war orders, and coordinate with civil authorities,” the Air Force explains.
In simpler terms, this plane is built for worst-case scenarios—like a nuclear attack that could wipe out key government buildings. With potential threats from countries like North Korea or Russia, this aircraft plays a crucial role in national security.
There are only four E-4Bs in existence, all stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. This base is also home to the U.S. Strategic Command, which oversees nuclear operations.
What makes these planes capable of surviving extreme situations? Their size and special features play a big role.
Each E-4B is 231 feet long, 63 feet high, and has a wingspan of 195 feet. It weighs an enormous 800,000 pounds, making it one of the heaviest aircraft in operation.
Four powerful turbofan engines provide a combined 208,000 pounds of thrust, allowing it to stay airborne for long periods. With mid-air refueling, it can fly indefinitely if needed.
These aircraft are also built with protective shielding against nuclear and thermal effects, as well as advanced cooling systems for electronics.
The cost of one E-4B? An incredible $223.2 million. At least one of these planes is always on standby, ready to support U.S. leaders at a moment’s notice.
