Transgender athlete AB Hernandez has made headlines after winning a girls’ triple jump event by an impressive eight feet. This victory has sparked much debate in the sports world. AB Hernandez, a junior at Jurupa Valley High School in California, participated in the Ontario Relays invitational meet on February 22, 2025.
At the event, Hernandez achieved a jump of over 40 feet, leaving her closest competitor far behind with a jump of just over 32 feet. She also took first place in both the high jump and long jump at the same meet, showcasing her impressive athletic skills. Her performance has been outstanding, with many praising her achievements.

Hernandez’s success continued at the Roosevelt Invitational, where she again dominated the competition. In the triple jump, she finished almost three feet ahead of her nearest rival, and in the long jump, she was two feet ahead of the second-place finisher. Hernandez expressed her goals for the season, aiming for a 41-foot jump, particularly at the state level, to possibly win.
“Hopefully, I hit a 41 [footer] this year if it’s possible. Preferably at state so that I can possibly win,” Hernandez said. “I just keep telling myself you are No.1 — it’s yours to lose.”

However, her victories have sparked controversy. Critics argue that a transgender girl may have advantages over cisgender girls in sports. Many comments on social media have expressed frustration, with some calling her wins unfair and “unreal.” Some critics believe that her physical advantages, such as strength and muscle mass, give her an edge over cisgender competitors.
Meanwhile, debates around transgender athlete participation continue in legislative circles. A recent bill aimed at banning transgender women and girls from participating in school sports based on biological sex didn’t pass in the Senate, but the issue remains a hot topic.
