Tom Hanks is facing backlash after bringing back his “Black Jeopardy” character, Doug, on Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special.

Doug, a Trump supporter in a MAGA hat, was first introduced in 2016 as a character meant to show both the differences and similarities between Trump voters and Black culture.
Not everyone found it funny this time. Many Trump supporters reacted negatively, saying the joke felt old and divisive—especially now that Trump has gained more support from diverse voters and won the popular vote in the 2024 election.
The Scene That Upset Viewers

During the new sketch, Doug appears on stage but refuses to shake hands with the host, played by Kenan Thompson.
That moment sparked outrage online, with many calling it an unfair and outdated stereotype of Trump voters.
Former RFK Jr. aide Link Lauren criticized the show, calling it “disgusting” and saying: “This show wonders why their ratings are so low. Trump won the popular vote. This tired stereotype needs to go.”
Right-wing influencer Dominick McGee also called out Hanks directly, writing: “Tom Hanks just insulted every Republican by dressing as a Trump supporter and mocking them.”
Trump Supporters Call Out SNL’s Declining Popularity

Some also pointed to SNL’s ratings, saying the show is losing relevance.
A pro-Trump account on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: “Tom Hanks and SNL think it’s funny to mock half the country. No wonder no one watches anymore.”
Of course, not everyone was upset. Some viewers found the sketch funny and enjoyed seeing MAGA supporters get mad over it.
More Jokes About Trump Throughout the Night
Hanks’ sketch wasn’t the only joke about Trump. The show included several political jabs throughout the night.
Steve Martin made fun of Trump renaming the Gulf of Mexico, pretending to call it the “Gulf of America.”
Later, he joked about ICE agents arresting Martin Short, who is Canadian, for not having a passport.
Another sketch featured a song with a joke about Trump moving to Florida.
Is SNL Stuck in the Past?
SNL has always used political humor, but some believe its portrayal of Trump voters is outdated.
With its ratings dropping, the debate continues—is SNL still relevant, or is it repeating the same old jokes?
