The story of Matilda Callaghan – the little girl who was covered in polka dots

Rebecca Callaghan’s pregnancy in 2012 was difficult, and doctors decided to induce labor early due to excess fluid around the baby. However, nobody realized something was wrong with little Matilda until about half an hour after she was born.

When Matilda was born, she had a large blue mark on her face that stretched down one side of her body. Initially, doctors thought it was just a bruise, but they soon realized it was something more serious.

After two weeks, Matilda was diagnosed with Sturge-Weber syndrome, a rare neurological skin condition that causes seizures, learning difficulties, and paralysis. Matilda became very ill and had to be transferred to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, England. The parents feared they might not see their daughter alive again.

Matilda’s condition worsened, and the doctors discovered two holes in her heart. Despite the risks, Matilda was a fighter and survived the surgery. She also started laser treatments to remove the birthmark, which could take up to 16 years to fully disappear.

Even with regular painful treatments, Matilda remained a happy little girl. But her birthmark and condition attracted many stares and hurtful comments. Some people wrongly assumed that the parents caused her condition by leaving her too close to a radiator. Her father, Paul, wished people could look beyond her appearance and see her as the wonderful child she is.

In addition to the birthmark, Matilda’s disease caused her to lose most of her vision, and she can’t walk on her own. However, with the help of a special walking frame, she has taken a few steps.

Despite the challenges, Matilda is known for her smile and strong spirit. Her parents are incredibly proud of her and cherish every moment.

Today, Matilda is 8 years old. In June 2019, her family shared a recent photo of her in her wheelchair. They were raising money for a new wheelchair to help her enjoy time outdoors, away from crowds.
