In 2005, two very special girls were born. Isabelle and Abby were not only identical twins but were also conjoined from the chest to the abdomen—an extremely rare condition that immediately became a medical challenge in Minnesota.
Their birth was a historic moment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. The twins shared a liver, part of their small intestine, and had two hearts that were closely connected. Doctors called them “miracle babies” because of their survival.

Their story began with a routine ultrasound. Their mother, Amy, felt something was wrong when the technician took longer than expected. Soon, she and her husband, Jesse, learned the surprising truth— their daughters were conjoined.
The news was overwhelming. The chances of their survival were only 1 in 100,000. Still, Amy and Jesse were determined to do everything they could to bring their daughters into the world.
Fortunately, the delivery went well.
After five months, a team of 70 medical professionals prepared for their separation. The operation had a 90 to 95 percent success rate, but it was still a complex procedure.

Seventeen surgeons worked for 12 hours to separate the girls. One of the biggest challenges was dividing the liver they shared.
Thankfully, the surgery was successful. That night, for the first time, the girls slept in separate beds. Though they needed breathing support at first, their recovery was quick.
Two weeks later, they went home to North Dakota—now as two individuals.
Their journey touched many people. Thousands of messages poured in, and over $50,000 was raised to support their family. Their parents, grateful for the support, often reflected on how much the experience had meant.

As the years passed, Isabelle and Abby grew up as cheerful, active kids who loved gymnastics, fashion, and friendly competition.
Now, at 19, they don’t remember being conjoined, but their bond is still strong. They continue to lead happy lives, moving forward while staying connected as sisters.
Their journey is not just about a medical procedure—it’s about family, determination, and the unique bond they share.
