Singer Sam Smith has shared for the first time that they identify as non-binary and genderqueer. In an interview, they explained how they have always questioned their identity and struggled with the idea of gender.
“I’ve always had a battle between my body and my mind,” Smith said during an Instagram Live conversation. They admitted that at times, they wondered if they wanted to transition but later realized that the non-binary identity resonated with them.

“When I heard people talk about being non-binary and read about it, I thought, ‘Yeah, that’s me,’” Smith explained. They described gender as a spectrum rather than two fixed categories.
Smith also reflected on past experiences with body image. They recalled having liposuction at 12 years old after doctors found their body was storing extra estrogen.
Over the years, Smith has been open about their sexuality. In past interviews, they identified as gay but later expressed that their understanding of gender and attraction has evolved. They now feel more aligned with the non-binary identity.

“Non-binary means you don’t identify as strictly male or female. You are a mix of different things. You are unique,” Smith shared.
Smith also discussed how hearing other people’s stories helped them embrace their identity. They said reading about others who came out as non-binary encouraged them to speak openly.
In 2019, Smith officially announced they use they/them pronouns and asked people to respect their identity. They described this moment as a “coming home” to themselves.
“This is how I understand it: I’m not male or female. I feel like I float somewhere in between,” they explained.
Smith’s journey of self-discovery has been personal and ongoing. They continue to advocate for more awareness and acceptance of gender diversity.
Meanwhile, reports surfaced that Smith had recently ended their relationship with actor Brandon Flynn after dating for nine months. However, Smith has not publicly commented on the breakup.

Their story has sparked discussions about gender identity, with many praising Smith for their honesty and openness.
