Singer Sam Smith shared some personal thoughts about gender identity and body image in an interview with actor Jameela Jamil on her series I Weigh Interviews. The conversation covered many topics, including how Smith identifies and past experiences with body confidence.

During the interview, Smith explained not feeling fully male or female, saying, “I think I float somewhere in between.” The singer, known for hits like Writing’s on the Wall, shared that while they have always been open about their thoughts on sexuality, this openness has extended to gender as well.
Smith went on to describe identifying as non-binary/genderqueer, explaining, “It means you do not fully identify with one gender. You are a mix of different things. You are your own creation.” Although some non-binary people prefer using “they/them” pronouns, Smith mentioned still using male pronouns for now.

Talking about personal experiences, Smith admitted to once questioning whether a sex change was the right path, saying, “It’s something I have thought about, but I don’t think it is for me.” Learning more about non-binary identities helped them feel a sense of connection. “When I saw the word non-binary and read about it, I thought, ‘That is me,'” they said.
Body image struggles were also a big part of the discussion. Smith shared feeling self-conscious from a young age, revealing that excess estrogen caused chest weight gain, which led to personal challenges. At age 12, Smith underwent liposuction to remove chest fat, hoping it would help. However, they recalled gaining the weight back quickly because their relationship with food hadn’t been addressed. “It didn’t really change anything,” Smith admitted.

Reflecting on these experiences, Smith shared an emotional post about body confidence, acknowledging that people might misinterpret it. “Some may think I’m showing off, but if they knew how much courage it took to do this, they wouldn’t say that.” Although body image remains a challenge, Smith sees personal growth as a step forward.
