Pope funeral ‘is being rehearsed’: Swiss Guard ‘prepare for pontiff’s death after the 88-year-old warned ‘I may not survive’ pneumonia

The Swiss Guard, who protect the 88-year-old Pope, are said to be preparing for his death, according to Swiss newspaper Blick. Reports claim the guards are under a curfew as part of their preparation.

Francis has already chosen his burial site and coffin, breaking from past traditions. His health worsened after he was rushed to Rome’s Gemelli hospital last Friday. He had been experiencing chest pain but resisted calls to seek medical care.

Doctors later confirmed that he has a serious respiratory infection. This led to the cancellation of several engagements and papal audiences this week.

The Vatican confirmed on Tuesday that he has pneumonia along with asthmatic bronchitis. His treatment includes cortisone antibiotics, but his condition remains complicated.

His lung health is a major concern. Many years ago, he had part of a lung removed, which could make recovery more difficult.

Italian Cardinal Angelo Comastri, 81, spoke about the Pope’s condition, saying: “Francis is very calm. His fate is in the hands of the Lord.”

According to Politico, two people close to Francis claim he said he “might not make it this time.”

In recent weeks, the Pope has been working to wrap up important matters to ensure his legacy continues. His actions come at a time when the Catholic Church is facing key political challenges.

People have now gathered outside Gemelli Hospital to pray for him.

Doctors recently diagnosed him with a polymicrobial respiratory infection. This means a mix of viruses and bacteria have caused double pneumonia.

Treatment depends on the severity. It may include oxygen support, IV fluids, and medication to fight the infection. So far, Francis has not needed extra oxygen and has continued to eat breakfast, read newspapers, and work from his hospital room.

The Vatican has not shared details on how he is responding to treatment, only confirming that he does not have a fever.

Some experts warn that not having a fever may not be a good sign, as it could indicate a weakened immune response.

There is still no update on how long he will remain hospitalized, but doctors say his treatment will take as long as necessary.
