Plus-Sized Influencer’s Demand To Airlines Sparks Outrage

In a bold step, 25-year-old influencer Jaelynn Chaney claims she is working with a US Senator to push for free airplane seats for overweight passengers. Chaney, known for her travel and lifestyle content, sparked debate by urging the Federal Aviation Administration and airlines to provide extra seats at no cost. In a recent TikTok video, she hinted at meetings with a US Senator’s team but has not revealed the name. However, her Instagram suggests online connections with Senators Maria Cantwell, Patty Murray, and Tammy Duckworth.

Chaney says she has spoken with airline representatives and has shared a petition signed by over 38,000 supporters. The petition calls for free additional seats for plus-size travelers to make flying more comfortable. She also believes airlines should reimburse passengers who pay for extra seats themselves.

In her petition, Chaney describes past flight experiences where she faced discomfort and unkind remarks. She also mentions incidents where people refused to sit next to her fiancé. According to her, airlines need better policies to ensure plus-size passengers are treated with respect.

Although Chaney uses seatbelt extenders for comfort, she does not fly business or first class. Some of her followers question this decision. She also advocates for airline staff and TSA agents to receive training on handling situations involving plus-size travelers.

Her proposals include better screening guidelines and accessible screening equipment for larger passengers. However, she admits that the funding for these changes remains unclear.

In a statement to Fox News, Chaney said there is no simple solution to the funding issue but believes the changes are necessary. Interestingly, Southwest Airlines has a ‘Customer of Size’ policy, allowing overweight passengers to request extra seats for free.

Southwest’s policy defines passengers who extend into a neighboring seat and offers them additional seating, refundable at check-in. The airline focuses on body space rather than weight, avoiding weight or BMI checks.

Some people appreciate the policy for making travel easier, while others feel it creates an unfair advantage. Social media discussions raise concerns about space limitations for other needs, such as legroom or medical equipment.

Personal trainer Josh Nabbie has criticized Chaney’s proposal, arguing that all passengers face challenges and should adapt accordingly. Meanwhile, obesity rates in the US continue to rise, making airline accommodations an ongoing topic of discussion.
