People, including those who identify as abrosexual, are sharing their experiences and the journey of understanding this fluid sexual identity. Many have spoken about how long it took them to embrace this part of their identity.
What is Abrosexuality?
Abrosexuality refers to a sexual orientation that can change over time. According to Medical News Today, an abrosexual person may experience shifts in their attractions, sometimes changing from month to month, or even day to day. This reflects the idea that sexuality is not fixed but exists on a spectrum, allowing people to feel romantic or sexual attraction to different groups at different times.
Healthline explains that abrosexuality is not about simply changing one’s mind or trying on different labels. Instead, it represents a genuine evolution of one’s experiences over time.
Emma Flint, an abrosexual writer, shared her story in Metro. She described how her feelings would often change, saying, “One day, I felt like a lesbian, but days later, I’d align more with bisexuality. My sexuality was fluid.” Before discovering the term abrosexuality, Emma often felt lost and struggled with her changing identity when discussing it with others.
Emma mentioned that it took her 30 years to understand her abrosexuality. “I found out about abrosexuality at 30,” she said. “I had a hard time defining my sexuality because it changed so much. It wasn’t that I was indecisive; my identity was just evolving.”
On TikTok, user @zoebriskey explained that “abrosexuality is a fluid sexuality.” They noted that it’s different from pansexuality, though an abrosexual person might identify as pansexual at some point. The term comes from the Greek word “abro,” meaning “delicate” or “graceful,” which fits the fluid nature of abrosexuality.
Awareness of abrosexuality is growing. In 2021, Michelle Visage, a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, shared the abrosexual pride flag on Instagram. This flag has five colors—dark green, light green, white, light pink, and dark pink—and was first introduced on Tumblr in 2013.
As more people share their experiences, the conversation around abrosexuality continues to grow, helping others understand and accept different sexual identities.
