Neven Hart, who lives with his fiancée Amber in Southern California, became paralyzed from the waist down after a dirt bike accident at 20 years old. Now in a wheelchair, Neven and Amber share insights about their life, offering a perspective on living after losing the use of his legs.
The couple frequently answers questions on TikTok, and last month, they tackled a topic many people are curious about: intimacy after paralysis.
The specific question was, “How does a paralyzed person have sex?” Amber explained that many people wanted to know more, so they made an educational video. She humorously told family members to skip the video if they preferred not to know the details.
In the video, Neven explained that he uses an injectable medication to help achieve an erection. Amber noted that the medication isn’t covered by insurance and costs about $180 for two small vials.
The couple discussed different positions, with Neven jokingly calling himself a “pillow princess.” He clarified that he could take other positions and doesn’t always have to lie down. They emphasized that the idea of him always staying on his back was “far from the truth.”
Neven and Amber shared that they learned helpful tips from the rehabilitation facility where Neven recovered. Neven introduced a special chair called the ‘intimate rider’, which helps create motion and makes intimacy easier for people with limited mobility.
Neven demonstrated the chair, explaining, “You just move your neck, and it’ll move.” He added that the chair costs $550 but is “worth every penny” because of the freedom it provides.
Despite the costs, Neven and Amber acknowledged that maintaining an intimate relationship can be expensive, but they accepted it as part of their reality.
Neven admitted that making a video about their intimacy wasn’t something he imagined doing, but he felt it was worth it if it could help others in similar situations. Amber added that when Neven was first injured, there was “no information” available on sex after paralysis.
