Newborn Defies Odds: Starts Breathing on His Own After Life Support Is Removed

Pregnancy is often a time of excitement and hope, but for Chelsea Hough, it became an unexpected challenge. She faced a difficult situation when her newborn son, Karson, was diagnosed with serious health conditions.

Chelsea’s mother, Lisa, shared Karson’s story online. He was born with two rare and unrelated conditions—Non-Ketotic Hyperglycinemia (NKH), a metabolic disorder, and a brain bleed in the left temporal lobe. Doctors gave a heartbreaking prognosis, saying he had little chance of surviving more than a few hours. Even if he did, they believed he would have severe developmental limitations.

Faced with an incredibly difficult decision, Chelsea considered the medical advice and chose to take Karson off life support. Doctors told the family they would only have about ten minutes before his heart would stop. Everyone gathered, preparing to say goodbye.

Then, something unexpected happened. As soon as the ventilator was removed, Karson started breathing on his own. His heart rate and oxygen levels remained stable, defying medical expectations.

Five hours passed, and Karson was still breathing without assistance. Doctors, who had been certain he wouldn’t survive, were shocked. Lisa described the moment as something she never thought she would witness. She shared updates, saying he was not only breathing but also swallowing and even opening his eyes.

There was no clear medical explanation for his survival. The only word doctors could use to describe it was “miracle.” As the days passed, Karson grew stronger, bringing his family hope.

On March 1, the family received incredible news—Karson was going home. After weeks of uncertainty and worry, he had proven he was determined to live.

Lisa continued sharing his progress, expressing deep gratitude for every moment with him. Thousands of people followed his journey online, offering support and encouragement.
