Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most famous actors today, known for her roles in major franchises like The Hunger Games and X-Men. However, one of her films from 2017, Mother!, caused quite a stir and left many viewers confused.

The movie, which features Lawrence as an unnamed mother whose home is overrun by unexpected guests, received mixed reviews. Despite its intriguing premise, it didn’t resonate with audiences. Most of the criticism focused on how difficult it was to understand.
Some viewers speculated that Lawrence’s character represented Mother Earth, and the intruders symbolized humanity’s abuse of natural resources. Despite these theories, the film wasn’t well received by many. Even Lawrence admitted that she struggled to understand it, despite her close relationship with the director, Darren Aronofsky.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Andy Cohen asked Lawrence how much she understood the film. She responded honestly, laughing as she said, “I’m going to be honest. Well, I was sleeping with the director, so I had the CliffNotes. So, five. Or maybe four?”
Cohen was surprised, responding, “Four?! Wow, okay, that’s not very high.” Lawrence later opened up about how the film affected her relationship with Aronofsky.

She explained, “Normally, I promote a movie, ask people to see it, and then I let it go. But dating the director was different. We’d be on the press tour together, and after we’d return to the hotel, I didn’t want to think about the movie anymore.”
Lawrence added, “He wanted to talk about it all the time, but I just wanted a break from it.” She said it became hard to balance supporting him and wanting to avoid discussing Mother! all the time. Eventually, she realized it wasn’t healthy for their relationship.
After the film’s release, Lawrence and Aronofsky ended their relationship just two months later.
