When Deyvion was just a baby, a fire broke out in the apartment where he slept. Firefighters saved him from the flames, but he was left with severe burns on his face. It was a miracle that Deyvion survived, and his recovery journey began at a special burns unit where he fought hard to regain his health.
A New Beginning
Deyvion went through his recovery alone, without the support of family by his side. It wasn’t until he was 5 years old that he was placed in foster care with Beth Plunkett, a single mother of two. Beth immediately felt a strong connection to Deyvion.

“I thought he was a beautiful little boy, and I fell in love with him very quickly,” Beth said.
Beth was not the only one who was touched by Deyvion’s story. After 2,545 days without a family, Deyvion was finally adopted by Beth.
A Loving Family

Beth shared her hopes for Deyvion, saying, “I want him to be, most importantly, just happy… to have goals and reach them.” She added that she believes God has great plans for him.
Deyvion now has a family that loves him deeply, including his new mom, siblings, and even the firefighters who saved him. Deputy Chief Eric Smith and his team from the South Metro Fire Department in Raymore have never forgotten Deyvion’s story.
A Special Day
When Deyvion’s adoption was finalized, Smith and his crew celebrated by giving him a special jacket and hat. They also took Deyvion and Beth to court in their truck to make the adoption official.
Smith gave Deyvion a high five and told him, “He’s extremely special. We don’t always understand why things happen, but we do now.”
Deyvion will always be surrounded by love. This brave, sweet boy deserves all the happiness in the world after everything he’s been through.
