A tragic fire broke out at the Pulse nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, claiming the lives of at least 59 people and injuring more than 155 others. Among the victims was 25-year-old footballer Andrej Lazarov, who lost his life while trying to help others escape the flames.

Lazarov’s club shared a statement expressing their grief, highlighting his bravery in his final moments. According to them, he was overcome by smoke while assisting others. His teammates and the football community were devastated by the loss.
Before joining Shkupi in September, Lazarov had played in Croatia for over a year and was a former youth international for Macedonia. His death left a deep impact on those who knew him.
The fire started in the early hours of Sunday during a performance by hip-hop duo DNK. Over 1,000 people were inside the venue when the flames spread rapidly. Firefighters and emergency responders from nearby towns rushed to the scene to control the situation and rescue those trapped inside.

Footage from the nightclub showed intense flames and thick smoke filling the space. Videos captured moments before the fire started, showing the use of indoor pyrotechnics known as stage jets. Soon after they were activated, flames appeared above the performers and quickly spread.
Authorities believe the fire was caused by sparks from the pyrotechnics igniting the highly flammable ceiling material. The country’s interior minister explained that the fire spread quickly, producing thick smoke that made it difficult for people to escape.

Videos also showed clubgoers attempting to put out the fire, while others panicked as they tried to find a way out. Witnesses reported that a stampede occurred, leading to several people being crushed. Most of the victims were between the ages of 14 and 25.
Many of the injured were transported to hospitals in Kocani, Stip, and Skopje, with helicopters being used to transfer those in critical condition. Officials confirmed that at least 30 people were receiving treatment at the Kocani hospital, while 60 others were moved to another facility.

The North Macedonian prime minister called it a tragic day for the country, expressing condolences to the victims’ families. The UK ambassador to North Macedonia also shared his sympathies, emphasizing the devastating impact of the incident.
Authorities have launched an investigation and are questioning those involved in organizing the concert.
