A flight expert has revealed why wearing leggings on a plane may not be a good idea.
Choosing the right outfit for a flight can be tricky. You want to stay comfortable, avoid being too hot or cold, and maybe even look good. However, experts say there are certain clothing items you should avoid on a plane.
For example, some flight attendants warn against wearing flip-flops or Crocs, especially if you plan to use the airplane bathroom. One attendant explained: “Be careful wearing sandals in the lavatory. That isn’t water on the floor, and sandals make it easier for whatever that liquid is to get on your feet.”
Another flight attendant has advised against wearing shorts during a flight. In a TikTok video, they shared: “Try not to wear shorts. You don’t know how clean the seats or surfaces are, so wearing pants can help protect you from germs.”
Now, flight expert Christine Negroni, author of The Crash Detectives: Investigating the World’s Most Mysterious Air Disasters, has added leggings to the list of clothing you should avoid.
Negroni explained that leggings, made from synthetic materials, could be dangerous in the event of an emergency. She said: “Most air accidents are survivable, but many involve fire. Synthetic materials like those used in leggings can melt when they get hot. This can cause severe burns or even bond to the skin, leading to scarring.”
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also recommends avoiding synthetic fabrics in case of emergencies. Negroni advises wearing clothes made from natural materials like cotton, wool, leather, or even denim, as they are less likely to melt in high heat.
When it comes to shoes, Negroni suggests choosing comfortable flats with sturdy soles that are easy to remove. She pointed out that during an emergency evacuation, the ground outside the plane could be cold, wet, icy, or even covered in debris. High heels can also damage evacuation slides, making flats a safer option.
Next time you’re flying, think carefully about your outfit to stay safe and comfortable.
