After President Donald Trump announced high tariffs, Canada and Mexico responded with their own. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned that these changes would have “real consequences for the American people.”

Since returning to the White House, Trump has made several changes to U.S. policies. His administration has revised immigration and passport rules and set records for signing executive orders. He also increased import duties on several countries, including China, Canada, and Mexico.
The new import duties include 10% on Chinese goods and 25% on Canadian and Mexican products. These changes have caused strong reactions from leaders in Canada, Mexico, and China.

Just before the announcement on February 1, Trudeau said, “We’re ready with a response, a strong but reasonable reaction.”
On January 31, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated, “We have Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C, depending on what the U.S. government decides.” She added that Mexico will always defend its dignity, sovereignty, and engage in equal dialogue with the U.S.
By Saturday night, both Canada and Mexico had announced their own counter-tariffs against U.S. goods.
Canada placed a 25% tax on $155 billion worth of American products. Trudeau emphasized that these measures would impact Americans directly and said, “The White House’s actions divide us instead of bringing us together.”
Meanwhile, Sheinbaum posted on social media that she had directed her economic minister to protect Mexico’s interests.
She also rejected claims that Mexico’s government has ties with criminal groups. “We strongly deny these accusations, as well as any attempt to interfere in our country,” she stated.
Sheinbaum also pointed out that if the U.S. wants to tackle fentanyl issues, they should focus on drug sales in their cities and stop the money laundering that supports illegal activity.
With tariffs now in place, tensions between the three countries are rising. It remains to be seen how this will affect trade and diplomatic relations moving forward.
