Black couple share journey to adopting three white children

Sadie and Jarvis Sampson spent years trying to have a baby. They tried everything, but nothing worked. They eventually accepted that they might only ever be an aunt and uncle—until one unexpected text changed their lives.

The couple had been trying since they got married in January 2018. When nothing happened, they turned to ovulation tests, prenatal vitamins, cycle tracking apps, and fertility monitors. They even listened to advice from family and strangers. For 14 months, they hoped and waited—but every test was negative.

Doctors didn’t offer much help. They told Sadie that losing weight might improve her chances. With no other options, she had surgery and lost 28 pounds.

Her doctor was thrilled and promised that if she wasn’t pregnant in six months, she would be referred to a fertility specialist. It wasn’t a yes, but at least it was a ‘not right now,’ and that gave them hope.

But even after losing weight, pregnancy never happened. Sadie, who had always dreamed of being a mom, felt defeated. The couple gave up, believing they were meant to be godparents and nothing more.

Just as they let go of their dream, Sadie received a text from a friend. A couple was looking for someone to foster their baby—would she and Jarvis be interested?

At first, they were unsure. They were told it would only be temporary while the baby’s mother sought treatment. They worried about getting too attached.

Then, the caseworker called with surprising news: “The birth mom has decided she wants you to adopt the baby instead.”

Sadie was in shock. They had gone from not having children to becoming parents overnight. She immediately called Jarvis: “Babe! They want us to adopt the baby!”

That weekend, they prepared, hoping the mother wouldn’t change her mind. On Monday, the caseworker confirmed: She wanted them to be the baby’s parents and was ready to sign the papers.

Their son, Ezra Lee, was born seven weeks early, weighing just 4 lbs., 5 oz. He was tiny, but to them, he was perfect.

The couple shared their news, and friends helped by buying 55 out of 72 baby registry items in just three days.

In October 2020, Ezra’s adoption was finalized. A year later, they welcomed twin girls, Journee and Destinee, through embryo donation.

Their family doesn’t look alike, but to them, that doesn’t matter. As their shirts say, “Families don’t have to match.” Their family is built on something stronger—love.
