Report: Mystery viral outbreak in China overwhelms hospitals

China is reportedly facing a mysterious viral outbreak, with hospitals in some regions appearing overwhelmed. Social media posts show crowded pediatric units with parents holding sick children and patients wearing face masks. Unconfirmed reports also suggest crematoriums and funeral homes are struggling to cope.

Many have compared this situation to the early days of the Covid outbreak in China, as official details remain unclear. Some local news outlets have attributed the outbreak to the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a virus that usually causes mild cold-like symptoms. However, Chinese authorities have not confirmed this. This recalls the ‘white lung’ cases of winter 2022/23, when children’s low immunity after lockdowns contributed to widespread illness.

Reports from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest that regular flu is behind much of the current rise in respiratory illnesses. Data shows that 30% of flu tests are coming back positive, and one in seven people hospitalized with severe respiratory issues has tested positive for influenza.

The Chinese CDC also warns of an increase in flu-like illnesses. In northern provinces, 7.2% of hospital outpatient visits last week were due to flu-like symptoms, a 12% rise from the previous week. Similar trends are being seen in southern provinces, where 5.7% of outpatient visits are flu-related, a 21% increase from the previous week. These levels are higher than the same week in 2021 but lower than peaks seen in 2022 and 2023.

Footage allegedly showing overcrowded hospitals in areas like Hunan province has sparked concern. A local farmer, identified as Mr. Peng, described a surge in illness, stating, “Seven or eight people died this week, mostly aged 40 to 80.” Crematoriums are reportedly seeing long lines, with one worker comparing the scene to a New Year’s trade fair.

Last year, mystery pneumonia cases among children raised similar alarms, though officials explained these as a rebound in infections after strict lockdowns ended. A Chinese video blogger shared how he and his wife fell ill recently, urging people to wear masks in crowded places to stay safe.

The situation continues to raise concerns as flu cases surge across the country.
