Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are navigating a new chapter in their lives after their 6-year-old son, Miles, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The family is adapting to what Teigen describes as “a different, new world for us.”
Teigen shared the news on Instagram after followers noticed a glucose monitor on Miles’ arm in a photo from the Paris Olympics. The picture showed Miles holding signs with his siblings, Luna and Teigen, celebrating Simone Biles and Team USA.
“A lot of you noticed something about a photo I posted,” Teigen wrote. She mentioned the outpouring of love and kind words from people who recognized the monitor. “I was, and am, so blown away by the kindness of this community.”
A few weeks before the diagnosis, Miles was hospitalized with a severe intestinal infection caused by bacteria in food or water. Teigen explained, “A lot of his friends were sick too, as they went to the same camp. It happens!”
During his hospital stay, doctors noticed unusual blood test results. After further testing, they identified Miles was in the “honeymoon period” of type 1 diabetes, a phase many young children experience when first diagnosed. “This is how many children are diagnosed,” Teigen shared, “going to the hospital for something different.”
The family gave Miles his first insulin shot and is now learning to manage his condition. “It’s a big change, but we’re learning on the fly,” Teigen said.
Teigen ended her post by thanking everyone for their support and sharing how much it means to Miles. “It helps him to know he’s not alone,” she wrote.
Miles, born in 2018, is adjusting alongside his family, supported by the kindness of others who understand what they’re going through. For Teigen and Legend, this marks the beginning of a new journey as they work together to support their son.
