A recent comment from White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt about former President Joe Biden’s return to public speaking has drawn criticism online and sparked a discussion about political respect.

Leavitt made her statement in response to Biden’s public speech on Social Security, delivered on April 15, 2025. It was one of his few public appearances since leaving office.
In her response, Leavitt said, “My first reaction when I saw former President Biden speaking tonight was surprise — I didn’t expect him to speak this late. I thought his bedtime was much earlier.”
This comment received attention online, with many people calling it unnecessary and disrespectful.

Leavitt, 27, continued her statement by addressing the speech topic. “He’s talking about Social Security. Let me be clear — President Trump fully supports protecting Social Security benefits for honest, tax-paying Americans and senior citizens who’ve paid into the system.”
She added that Trump defended Social Security during his first term and will do the same again.
Despite her focus on policy, it was Leavitt’s opening comment about Biden’s age that caused many people to respond online.
On Facebook, one user wrote, “Very rude. No matter your opinion, he’s still a former President and should be shown respect.”

Another person said, “Even though I agree with her on some things, this wasn’t professional. You don’t have to like Biden, but he’s still a person.”
More users described the comment as “inappropriate,” “childish,” and “unnecessary.”
On Instagram, reactions were also critical. One user wrote, “She’s usually good at her job, but this wasn’t the right way to speak.” Another added, “This comment crossed a line.”

Meanwhile, Biden had spoken at a national conference for disability professionals in Chicago, organized by the Advocates, Counselors, and Representatives for the Disabled (ACRD), as part of a national Social Security Day of Action.
During his speech, Biden raised concerns about the Trump administration’s approach to Social Security and emphasized the importance of protecting the program.
