While many parents support their children’s careers, there are still limits they may not cross.
If you’ve watched Euphoria, you know it deals with heavy topics like drug use and relationships, making it a show most would avoid watching with their parents.
But what happens when your child is one of the stars?
This was the case for Sydney Sweeney and her family.
Sweeney plays a character with several mature scenes in the popular HBO series, and while her career is taking off, the role came with its own challenges.
She had to fight for different roles after being known for her part in Euphoria.
Speaking to Variety, Sweeney shared, “It’s the ones I have to fight for that usually are the ones that I want, like Reality.”
She explained that she had to audition for the role like everyone else.
Sweeney had a similar experience with the White Lotus audition.
“They didn’t think I was right for White Lotus because of Euphoria,” she said. “So, I auditioned just like everyone else and got a callback.”
She added that while she could be offered roles similar to what she’s done before, it’s the surprising roles that she has to work harder for.
Those roles often challenge the typecasting from her previous work.
Despite her success, some of Sweeney’s family found it difficult to watch her in Euphoria, especially due to the mature nature of her scenes.
During an interview on Sunday Today with Willie Geist, Sweeney shared how her family reacted to her role.
While her mom was prepared for the storyline, her dad was not.
“My mom visited me on set, so she knew what to expect, but my dad didn’t,” she admitted. “I didn’t prepare him at all.”
Her dad ended up watching the show with other family members without much warning.
As you might guess, not everyone stayed for the entire episode.
Sweeney laughed, “My dad and grandpa turned it off and walked out, but my grandma is a huge fan and supports me.”
Sometimes, not everyone will be comfortable with the same things.
