Queensland hit by measles fears after infected traveller visits several sites

A health warning has been issued in Queensland after a person infected with measles visited several tourist spots. The individual, who had just arrived in Australia, was unknowingly contagious while traveling through various areas.

The person traveled through Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast from Wednesday, 2 April 2025, to Saturday, 5 April 2025. During this time, they visited multiple businesses and public locations, according to the Metro North Public Health Unit. The tourist stopped by Australia Zoo, a mini golf location, and several train stations, shops, and hostels.

On Wednesday, they visited several places in Surfers Paradise. These included Yo-chi on Surfers Paradise Blvd from 10:15 am to 11:00 am, followed by Cotton On from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Other spots included Ghanda Clothing from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm and Holey Moley Mini Golf from 2:15 pm to 3:45 pm. In the evening, they were at Restaurant Goldies from 6:45 pm to 8:00 pm before staying at Bunk Hostel on Beach Rd until 10:00 am the next day.

The tourist then moved to Brisbane, where they stayed at Bunk Hostel in Fortitude Valley until Friday morning. On Thursday, they visited Brooki Bakehouse from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm, Sushi Hub from 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm, and Cotton On on Queen Street from 2:00 pm to 3:10 pm.

On Friday, they were at Central Station Brisbane in the early morning and caught a train to Beerwah Station, arriving at 8:27 am. The tourist spent the day at Australia Zoo, before returning to Brisbane in the evening. They also visited the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Emergency Department on Friday evening.

The locations listed do not pose an ongoing risk, but Dr. Alexandra Uren from Metro North Public Health advises anyone who was at these spots during the mentioned times to watch for symptoms for up to 18 days. If symptoms develop, such as fever, tiredness, cough, or a red rash, individuals should seek medical advice. It’s important to call ahead to the doctor’s office to prevent spreading the illness to others.
