Twin brother of teen stabbed in heart at school track meet breaks silence

Hunter Metcalf struggled to hold back tears as he described the moment he tried to stop the bleeding from his twin brother Austin, who lost his life during a high school track meet.

On April 2, around 10 a.m., Hunter was with Austin at the David Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Austin, a talented athlete, was there to compete in discus and shot-put events.

The brothers were always together. They shared everything, from sports to daily life.
Hunter, who was born four minutes after Austin, explained they were resting in their school tent when a student from another school entered the area.

“There was a kid sitting under our tent,” Hunter told ABC affiliate WFAA. “We asked him to move, but he got upset. My brother stepped in and told him again to move.”

What happened next shocked everyone nearby.
According to a witness, the student — identified as Anthony Karmelo from Centennial High School — replied, “touch me and see what happens.” He then took a black knife from his backpack and stabbed Austin once in the chest before running away.

Hunter said he quickly turned around, but the stabbing had already happened. “I saw my brother, and I tried to help him,” Hunter said, holding back his emotions.

Hunter did what he could until help arrived.
He stayed with Austin until first responders came. “They pulled me off him,” he added, sharing that he wasn’t allowed to ride in the ambulance.

Their father, Jeff Metcalf, took Hunter to the hospital himself.

“They were identical twins,” Jeff said. “Hunter tried to stop the bleeding, but Austin passed away in his arms.”

Austin’s father described him as a bright young man whose smile lit up the room.
Despite efforts by the emergency team, Austin couldn’t be saved.

Hunter spoke about how much he admired Austin. “He was my big brother even though we’re the same age,” he said.

Karmelo, who was arrested at the scene, admitted to the act and is now charged with murder.
