In March 2023, Richard appeared vibrant at 89. He had once been the heartthrob of many, known for his roles that captured the hearts of women, but few knew that he came out as gay later in life, at almost 70. In 2004, Richard admitted that growing up, he hid his true self and struggled with self-hatred. Despite his fame, he had always felt conflicted inside.

During his career, Richard loved acting and the fame that came with it. He worked with people who accepted him for who he was, including his partner of 38 years, Martin Rabbett. However, Richard later admitted that he sometimes loved his career more than his relationship with Rabbett. Coming out on Dateline was a life-changing moment for him, calling it the “happiest day of my life.”

The couple met while Richard was in a play in Los Angeles. Though Martin was younger by 19 years, their connection was strong and deep. Richard described their relationship as one with no expectations, which made it even more meaningful.
